Don’t Fall for the Same Old Scare Tactics!

Two years ago, my opponents in the District 7 race claimed falsely that I wanted to take away people’s homes through eminent domain. That is absolutely not true – then or now.

In fact, I know first-hand the pain of being forced from your home. When I was three years old, the government took the land where my father had established True Lee Missionary Baptist Church. That is where Frazier Courts now stands.

Rather than go quietly, my father brought a lawsuit and forced the authorities to relocate 18 homes that were to be demolished along with the church. They were moved to the area where the rebuilt church stands, in the Bertrand neighborhood on Scyene Road.

Today, I pastor that church, and my son is the youth pastor. That is the legacy of my family. It would dishonor the life work of my father and mother – and go against my values – to support any attempt by government to take away people’s homes.

I do think government should use all the tools is has to drive out slumlords who charge outra-geous rents for housing that is unfit for people to live in, or businesses that breed crime and decay. My only goal is to IMPROVE the lives of residents — not to force them out.

Instead of spreading FALSE FEARS about what I MIGHT DO, I challenge my opponents to focus on what each of us has ACTUALLY DONE TO HELP OR HURT the community. I am proud of my record and welcome the chance to compare it to any of my opponents’.
